Theme 7: Look Closer!

I loved Diane Rehm's awesome show on poetry last week, and while her guests pondered why they love poetry, what they get out of it, and what they look for when they read it, I thought of our "look closer" theme and was inspired to think about my own reasons for loving poems.

It's not the simplest question--  the reasons differ, depending on the poem and my own moods.  However, I did feel a strong resonance with one of the guest's ideas about connecting with other people (glimpsing their souls, as I believe she elegantly put it) through reading poems.

Of course, you can't assume the poem's persona is the poet's persona, but I still very much identify with the idea of a poem having a sort of soul of its own, which may or not be entirely revealed by the poem itself.
So, here's my take on that idea-- looking more closely at why I read poems, which in itself, is sort of an act of "looking closer!"

Why Read Poems?

for that which is clawing at the edges,
for the muffled scuffling under the lines,
for the furtive whisper rustling beneath,
never sure if it is the echo of your own breath,
or the tender, raw sound of another,
warm in your ear.

for the quick fire, the immediate flash,
through a windowpane smeared with ink--
you draw back from the closeness,
just for a moment,
to recollect.

do you hear that music?
i hear it, too.

Theme #7

This quarter's theme is brought to you by Mary!...

"Taking a Closer Look"

This time around let's try to really get to know our subject. The subject could be something very familiar that you see all of the time, maybe even every day, but you don't always notice the details of it. For instance, it could be your car keys, a plant, or maybe even your dog. The result with this theme could be more of a study/series than a neat and tidy 'final piece.' With the usual quick pace of life, there's so much we miss. Let's take time to slow down this round and discover the nuances. :)

The temps du reveler for this round will be (around) March 19th.  Or maybe April 19th.  Let's see what happens, guys!

P.S. How 'bout a BIG BIG welcome to our newest artiste-in-the-making, Mr. C. B. Wise!!!

Food: Pie!

Here's what Lexi had to say about her creation above, as paraphrased by me, Nicole, per a phone conversation we had earlier:

"On Thanksgiving I made an apple pie with just a regular ol' crust, but I knew it could be so much better. Also, in the back of my mind I had the food theme in mind, so I thought making a prettier pie would be the perfect opportunity. That same evening, after our Thanksgiving feast, I went on Amazon and ordered some leaf cookie cutter/stamps that I thought would be a fun pie decoration being that it was the end of fall and the beginning of holiday time. A couple weeks later after the cutters came in, I made apple pie #2 (above). At first I thought I would just use the leaves around the edge, but I ended up enjoying the leaf cutter so much that I covered the whole top! :) I'm pleased with how it turned out. I feel like when the food is pretty I enjoy it more."

Food: Baby Shower Treats

On November 24th, we, the Moody girls, threw a Surprise Baby Shower for, our very own...Nicole Moody!  With a fun "whale" theme, we embraced the food part with "artsy apartsy" flair!

After the whale cookie cutter was purchased, and the sugar cookies were baked...the painting fun began!  Dots, stripes, zig zags...voila...beautiful!  Until the dreaded shark cookie appeared...and took out the whale head of one!!!  Thank you Chaz, with all of your creative "bloody" artistry!!!

We even found a whale pacifier to add to the finishing touches of the baby fruit bowl, wonderfully carved & assembled by Jenny! :)

All in all, we had such a fun time getting "artsy" with the food for Nicole's baby shower.  Now we're all just anxious for Baby Boy Wise to join us!

Food: Clementine Wreaths

I was in the holiday spirit for this project and made clementine wreaths for Brian's co-workers. I saw the idea on Pinterest and it seemed easy enough, so I went for it. It took a little figuring out on the spacing, widths, lengths, etc, but after the first one came together, the rest went quickly. Brian helped out with cutting the twine pieces. :) -Nicole

Food

I kept it pretty simple this time.  Just painted some quick, sketchy interpretations of one of my favorite treats:  lemon tarts.  I was inspired by a picture Nicole (or possibly Brian) took of some tarts at my wedding.
